po przeczytaniu blurba zgadywałam, że będzie tutaj więcej humoru (a przynajmniej takiego, który byłby rzeczywiście zabawny jakkolwiek) - i mam wrażenie, że znacznie by tutaj pomógł. Tak, mamy tu wąsko-myślącą postać uzależniającą się od pornografii (i tu pomysł na humor się kończy), próbującą w takowy nieporadny sposób podświadomie poznawać świat jej daleki. Jednak czy jako alegoria, czy jako po prostu opowieść chasydzkiej dziewczyny oglądającej szmuc, to ta pozycja się po prostu nie broni - zbyt nierówna, nie kończąca wielu wątków - niektóre jednak kończy przy tym w taki banalny sposób, że ręce opadają. Ciekawa, ale ograniczona ograniczeniem głównej bohaterki - zabieg zrozumiały i oczywisty, jednak też przez to książka jest równie oczywista.

absurdly creative and creatively absurd concept-- interesting, but I don't think it really worked. mostly an enjoyable read, but nothing that makes you think too hard-- lots of areas that could have been explored more meaningfully

In the end, I found the cover to be the best part of this book. The setting was interesting but it felt like most of the characters, besides the main one, were not developed, and even she remained a bit removed. I was surprised that the entire story resolved so simply. The 3 stars is a rounding up.
Unique! No idea who i would recommend this book to, but if you come across it then enjoy!
LOVED THIS. i loved the style so much, the yinglish was a great and strong choice and really colored the world raizl was living in. very lovely coming of age story for someone in a unique setting: cloistered in an insular, anti-assimilationist, high-control ultra-orthodox community that exists totally couched in 21st century new york city and all that comes with it. i always love a horny protagonist and raizl does not disappoint. i adored the descriptions of the porn, i loved the porn as a window into raizl's sexuality, her complete lack of control over her life and how she copes with that, her curiosity regarding the outside world, and her teetering on the precipice of adulthood in multiple senses. raizl herself was lovely, funny, relatable and very sympathetic. i found some of it to be a bit clumsy (especially the very quick reference to racism within the ultra-orthodox community as well as the storyline regarding the rebbtizin) but that's okay. i read this book almost entirely in one day.
