An original idea for sure! And as much as Laurence is a "perfect gentleman" character, I still enjoyed him and his rapport with Temeraire. The pacing of this book is wild honestly. It starts off action packed, then we really slow down for a training section, speedrun to a battle, then a lot more down time, and then finally the ending sequence which kind of came out of nowhere. For once, I didn't mind the slower sections. Likely will read the next one.

I came to this via Uprooted and Spinning Silver. Novik’s narrative voice is quite different. Less sentimental, faster paced. It’s like Master and Commander. Maybe I preferred it to her other books because it’s ultimately shorter. But I also loved Temeraire’s voice and perspective. Intelligent with the cutting perception of a outsider, naturally caring and socially acceptable, occasionally distracted by draconic impulses.
