Historical fantasy at its finest.
England and France at war. Napoleon running amok, great naval battles with frigates and ships of the line and of course the air force of dragons.
yes, dragons, and they talk too.
I fell head over heels for this series. I have always been a fan of dragons and history so when they came packaged together in this series I really had no choice.
Great characters, tons of action and a bit of a history lesson from the Napoleonic wars.
Dig in.

Temeraire and Laurence were such interesting and fun characters to lead this story. Their connection was so gentle and respectful, incredibly refreshing. I loved having a full and complex dragon character instead of them just being dangerous versions of horses — I was such a dragon obsessed kid and this book really stoked that love. Additionally, I love an alternate history story. It’s especially fun to be able to imagine a fantasy map easily without having to refer to one at the front of the book constantly.

love temeraire sooo much. possibly one of the top dragon characters of all time. the writing is very clean with nearly no words wasted, though i don't have a head for military strategizing and those sections of the novel were more difficult to get through.

I didn't really think I'd love this book, since historical battles don't typically interest me much. But adding fantastically lovable dragons to the mix really made a difference. I really enjoyed this book.
I LOVE Temeraire, there's something just so charming about him. The concept of huge dragons carrying a whole crew of people is just so cool, and I'm excited to see more of that in the future installments. It's also been fun to see Laurence grow and change throughout the book.
So much of this first book was devoted to Laurence and Temeraire growing and learning together, which I loved. But I'm nervous that future books will focus more on the battles and war, which is less interesting to me, so we'll see if I love them all this much.
