I didn't really think I'd love this book, since historical battles don't typically interest me much. But adding fantastically lovable dragons to the mix really made a difference. I really enjoyed this book.
I LOVE Temeraire, there's something just so charming about him. The concept of huge dragons carrying a whole crew of people is just so cool, and I'm excited to see more of that in the future installments. It's also been fun to see Laurence grow and change throughout the book.
So much of this first book was devoted to Laurence and Temeraire growing and learning together, which I loved. But I'm nervous that future books will focus more on the battles and war, which is less interesting to me, so we'll see if I love them all this much.

No pude conectar con la manera en la que estaba narrada el libro
Pern vibes all the way. I love this so hard, and I'm dying for the next one. Made the mistake of reading the "excerpt from" at the end of the book and may I just say it is cruel and rude to select a portion that would make me champ even harder at the bit for the next one, and so I shall pine for it until I have it in my hands.
Side note: If this book were written in the first person it would be awful.

I really wanted to like this im just bored, i don't want to finish 🤷
I love dragons.
There are 2 types of stories that I just seem to not ever get enough of. School setting stories, and Dragons. Both are well worn and don't always have a lot to offer in terms of breakthroughs in the genre, but when I do find one it's almost an instant 5 star from me. But even if it doesn't, it's like good old fashioned comfort food and I typically still enjoy the read.
That's about where this one stood for me.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this book, but it definitely didn't captivate me like I was hoping. I did love the relationship and care that Captain Lawrence and Temeraire share with one another, but at the end of the day this wasn't something I was clamoring to get back to.
I listened to this one on audio. I think I am going to go for the second book and see how this all expands. Especially since with this first book you could tell the story was nowhere near done. But with the second book I am going to try reading it. The narrator wasn't bad. He was actually quite good, but as I've come to listen to many books and read many books I find that some types of books are better read than listened to no matter how good the narrator is. As I was listening I had that feeling almost the whole way through.
I anticipate more excitement in this series though. The dragon battles are pretty awesome and getting to know each dragon and their corresponding....owner? rider? best friend? I think has some awesome potential. Plus, DRAGONS!

This gave me the strongest feeling of Found Family that I have felt in a long time. Laurence and Temeraire just have such a special bond between them and all their interactions are so sweet and thoughtful and I just really wanna read bedtime stories to a dragon, is that too much to ask T.T
The scene where Laurence slept on the deck under Temeraire’s wing made my heart ache they’re literally so cute
I will say it lagged a bit for me in the end. Not because it wasn’t excellent, just I really don’t care much about war and tactics and shit. I’m just here for the character dynamics really. Can’t wait to keep reading the series:)
