Thanks to Simon Books for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review!

I absolutely DEVOURED this book. This is what I was hoping to get out of CAMP ZERO earlier this year: a story about the end of the world caused in no small part by shitty billionaires where someone actually wants to do something about it. I enjoyed the weaving of multiple points of view and narrative style throughout, never feeling lost or confused about where a chapter fell in the timeline. And while I suspected one of the major twists in the story, I wasn't disappointed that I'd seen it coming, I was delighted that the plot had taken that turn. The final big twist made me gasp aloud. Overall, I would recommend this if you like dystopias, hate assholes with more money than God, and feel ready to be swept into the future.

This was pretty nuts.
At first I had difficulty keeping track of the POVs &their roles. &it’s at times ridiculous/unbelievable but kind of believable with how AI is taking over the world.
But ultimately I really liked it.
The survivalists, the “good billionaire” fallacy, the plot twists.
How many people would you have to delete to save the world?
-note: the full cast recording of the audio was super well done.

a timely look at how big tech impacts our world, and how we are incapable of controlling them. this book's suggestion? people close to their ceos who still prioritise humans over profits.

the plot was simple to follow and had no complex threads, and i had seen the twist coming a mile away.

what i find more interesting is the discussions on the hunter-gatherer/farmer archetypes using the bible, and also the analogies for machine learning. the core takewaway for me was how the archetypes are perpetually in conflict with each other, and how the current predominant rabbit archetype has impacted our world and society at large. definitely worth a deep dive into with the authors alderman credits at the end.

overall an optimistic take on how big tech's power can be curbed and used for good.

Technology is at the forefront of society but it comes at a cost. While the top billionaires behind the major tech companies are pushing their products, they are secretly preparing for life in the event of a catastrophic event. With the knowledge that their work is contributing to climate change and political strife, these few individuals have their eyes set on how they will survive the fallout. A select group of unique individuals with various backgrounds - a hacker, a former cult member, a former tech CEO, a social media survivalist, and the wife of one the billionaires - find a way to infiltrate this elite bubble and strive to heal the world and society from the damages caused.

This book was an absolute standout read for me this year. I love dystopian/sci-fi reads and this book exceeded all my expectations. Honestly, I went into this book thinking it would be your typical dystopian read and I was pleasantly surprised with where this story went. The parallels to today's society, real life major figures, and the general message of this story was phenomenal. At times the different timelines and POVs were a little confusing, but once I understood the structure of the book it was easier to keep up. I really enjoyed the use of  mixed media throughout the book - especially the Reddit style blog entries. I am fascinated by cults and loved the way this concept and religion was intermingled in this futuristic dystopian world. My one complaint with this book was that it ended - I loved the open ending but really want to see more in this universe.
