This book started fairly slow. In my head I was preparing to give it 3 stars. By halfway through I was enthralled and completed the last 350 pages in a day. Though I’m still confused why two very different stories with almost no overlap were in the same book (one a CIA agent tracking a drug shipment across the Sahara, one an escalation in North and South Korea causing a threat of nuclear war).
I have read modern military books before, and they are usually not my favourite. But I’ve read and loved 10 other books by Ken Follett so I thought I’d give it a try. I was intrigued, shocked, and a little unnerved at how diplomatic relations work and how quickly things could escalate even when no one wants to resort to nuclear weapons. It’s a sobering thought.

3.5 stars. Action-packed and suspenseful. It wasn't my favorite Follett book though. I didn't get attached to very many of the characters, but the story certainly kept my attention.
I've read and enjoyed other Ken Follett. I did not enjoy this book. It relied on tired tropes and generally soft storyline, with large sections of seemingly irrelevant plot, particularly the love interests. Not my cuppa tea..
Oh my gosh. This book was extremely well written and had great characters and storylines and was well on the way to a 5 star review until the end. What a horrible ending. 24 hours of listening time and then....blah
Wow. [a:Ken Follett|3447|Ken Follett|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1604049089p2/3447.jpg] is back to thrillers! And what a ride. This one is pretty quick paced and journeys around the globe as the world leaders work to avoid full out nuclear war! Completely plausible, even if I do think some of the leaders act a little out of character (South Korea President No in particular). The book ends with a bang and completely leaves the reader hanging as to what happens after.
Another great read from Mr. Follett.

November is the month for giving THANKS and I am so thankful that two of my favorite authors published a new book this month! I really love Ken Follett books with their multiple characters, multiple continents, and complex intertwining plots. I really enjoyed all of the storylines, especially refugee Kiah. I admit my blood pressure really escalated at the cusp of Nuclear War, but much of the war and military strategy. Also the romantic storylines got a little cheesy for me.... but I will continue to read these books.
