A thoroughly enjoyable and well researched spy thriller that showed how political moves and counter-moves can escalate to inevitable, yet undoubtedly futile, war (with far reaching consequences and destruction on a global scale).

The subplots were all equally propulsive and captivating and I felt like an innocent bystander, compelled to witness the horrors but powerless to intervene.

So many spy thrillers end all too neatly, with war averted, political leaders seeing the errors of their ways, and reconciliation on the horizon...but this is not that book. The conclusion made this book all the more chilling and, in the current political climate, it seems frighteningly plausible.

My husband is not a reader, but he enjoys watching spy thrillers, so we opted to listen to this audiobook together on long car journeys and were both equally impressed by the scope of this novel. The suspense created was phenomenal and the characters portrayed were varied and likeable (you really do root for them).

A brilliant and engaging novel, expertly narrated.

Never. It isn't mentioned, but it's such a fitting title! This is my 9th book written by Ken Follett, and it keeps being amazing how he really can make me feel something towards a character; love, hate, impatience, understanding, ...
This is a book that paints a picture of international politics. How small decisions can have a big unforeseen impact. It makes me think of the butterfly effect.

It started Slow and as the Book continued the Plot went faster.

A little too frighteningly realistic and long.

Really good book but somewhat terrifying!

Enjoyable as ever with Ken Follett’s books but not up there with his best
