I‘m not going to rate this one because it is a beautiful book and I totally get it but at the same time it is also off-putting and I don’t get it at all. Van Camp can write a story, but aspects of this one just missed the mark for me. I‘m aware that this is very subjective, especially considering that there are a lot of elements that I loved here - the writing is beautiful, the delivery of information fantastic (I enjoyed piecing together Larry‘s backstory and as tragic as it is, it feels really authentic that he is never able to say it all directly), and there are a lot of interpersonal character moments that pack a punch. But at the same time, the obsession with sex and Juliet had me wanting to put the book down indefinitely.

I guess that’s just how it goes sometimes. (Btw if you’re looking for a „funny“ book you should look somewhere else. I just saw that it’s described as such and though there are some funny moments, most of it is pretty grim.)

Second time through this book. It's such a dark and humorous read.

I read the 20th anniversary edition of this, which includes two additional short stories after the mail novella. It’s definitely of the time it was written see misogyny of teenage boys written as “boys will be boys” and a relatively flat teen girl character, but overall, I enjoyed it.

I adored this book. I'm not even sure what to say about it, I just loved it. Amazing exploration of northern life, trauma, indigenous issues... It took me a bit to get into the style but it is an incredible read.

A book that I found to be a particular coming-of-age story.

Whereas many coming of age stories have a, more or less happy ending, this story, aside from being sad and quick, was also fulfilling. Though seemingly abrupt at first, the ending seemed right for the story.

The book provides an interesting perspective on the lives of First Nations tribe members growing up.
