This book is bad freakin ass and I don’t usually say that about politics/intrigue. My jaw hit the floor at around 85% completed AND STAYED THERE. Do yourself a favor and listen to the audio of this series by Steve West. You won’t be disappointed.

Now that we knew the main character, and that the author was likely to keep things from us, this was pretty fun from the get go. And then there were parts that were the opposite of fun (intentionally). And there were parts in the first half that just ... described the military and political situation. Those were hard to read more than one of in a sitting. But then we hit a point about 1/2-2/3 of the way into the book and finished the rest in basically a single sitting. Excited for the third book.

This is better than the first book. But can we just talk about the ending? Lol, how did those two ended up together?

How on earth Turner got me to root for a couple where one party maimed the other is a mystery I am happy to leave unsolved. We love a scheming, murderous queen.

I seem to be the only person who liked the first book more. The political intrigue was amusing, but it got a little too cheesy for me, romance-wise. Three stars feels a little low, so I'll clarify that this series is still very interesting and I'm excited to read more.

Doing a re-read of this entire series before starting Return of the Thief.

Third time and this is still a 5 star read for me. It’s a perfect little novel: great world building, a twisty plot full of political intrigue, and the romance, *SIGH* the romance.

I enjoyed the unreliability of the main narrators and other povs. Im getting a bit annoyed with flashbacks to clues that were withheld from the reader in the moment that they happen. I don't need everything spelled out but a dropped hint that we could later Clock as being a proper clue would make it a lot more fun as an experience.

Plot reminded me a bit of quintana of charyn by melina marchetta, in a good way.
