This is a very intriguing book and very informative about not just just the plain use of algorithms, but getting into the complex ways they might work and how they can be used in the future. Even with all the strides that tech has made in the past few years since this was written, I know I’d be interested to know what the updates are to a lot of these chapters.

2019, 3 stars: Fun & accessible, though maybe a little more surface level than I was hoping for.
September 2023: Re-read because of Taylor Behnke's Hopepunk Book Club I think my first review fundamentally misunderstands the purpose the book in a snooty and terrible way. So much has changed in so short a period of time, but the book remains relevant. I think this is a really useful primer and asks some big questions we, as a society, should all be asking ourselves. I think this book does a great job of presenting the problems while still giving the reader hope that we can come up with solutions. I do think there are a few places where that press towards optimism leaders her to gloss over some things. The ways she talks about crime, in particular, truly feels like someone who knows tech but did very cursory research into crime & its solutions. On the whole this is a worthwhile read.

I'm not a big reader of non-fiction, but the way that this one was written made it really interesting to read and the topic is increasingly becoming important for the public to be aware of

Very interesting. Makes you think about the algorithms that impact our lives
