I loved the descriptions of art and the art world. It’s something I have no experience in, even I used to look from the outside. There were thought provoking themes, and I found the characters quite interesting and real. They felt dynamic and changeable, experiencing real life feelings and grappling with problems that felt believable for their world. There were a few periods where I found my interest waffling, but those blips didn’t last for long before I got brought back in.

An exploration of sexuality, yes, but mostly about what it means to be an artist. The two main characters are opposing in so many ways (one a very marketable artist and the other exploring what it means to even make art) but come together really beautifully.

I’m not really someone who is fascinated by or understands art. I would describe my previous feelings on the art world as being filled with slight contempt and critique for the pretentiousness and elitism typically put on display. And this book didn’t do much to endear me anymore towards it, but I feel as though that was the point. Each of the characters and their perspective in this book explored different flawed aspects of the art world.

Louisa’s arc very much touches on the experience of classism in both academia and galleries, and the exploitation of poor artists by the elite. Karina’s storyline portrays the prevalence of sexual violence. Preston’s experiences walk the line of betrayal of integrity. And Robert’s arc is the constant contemplation of consent in art, which was most interesting to me.

To me, this entire book seemed to pose the question, “is an art career worth pursuing?” And it’s a question that is not answered, but left open. The constant clashing of morals, creativity, and money makes it impossible for a definitive answer to exist. But there is this shinning light that seeps through that refocuses on each character’s roots and what made art so captivating to them to begin with.

I thought this book fostered a fascinating discussion on the art world and academia using characters who were complex and flawed with diverse perceptives.
