What a lovely read. Maame focuses on Maddie’s grieving process (or lack of process because it’s not cut and dry) after losing her dad. It’s heavy but relatable.

I found myself on the verge of tears, reminiscing on the memories of my father who is still very much alive. The book drew parallels to many people in my life. A story so deeply personal that autobiographical. It captured grief so well and the nature of a culture that can teach us to be repressive of any negative emotions. The ebbs and flows of finding oneself and racial dynamics through romance, friendship and life outside of your family is so important and poignant weaved effortlessly through the book.
Jessica George ATE and left NO crumbs with Maame - It was an unexpected and refreshing read! I cried happy tears, sad tears, and laughed out loud!
I finished this and, out loud, said, “Wow, what a book.”

I'm very in the middle with this novel. On one hand, I did enjoy it. A great story of the struggles of culture, independence, and becoming your own person. On the other hand, I didnt like it. Maddie was so immature, and it was hard to picture her as an adult. For someone who graduated college, lived separately from her family, and took care of her sick father, she was naive about everything. Some things were understandable considering her overbearing mother, but she was naive with everyone she came across. How does a 25 year old have no friends, no boyfriend, or a life of her own? It didnt make sense because her mom wasnt even living in the same country as her. Still, Maddie did grow ans the story touched on some serious social issues with such grace and detail. For those reasons, I'm rating this 3 stars. While not exactly my favorite, I can admire details and certain aspects of the story.
