Really creepy and unsettling.

This might be the most disturbing thing I have ever read. I think it is the juxtaposition of the cutesy little characters and the horrific things that happen to them/by them. The story starts with a bunch of little people fleeing the decomposing dead body of a little girl they have been living in. Did they always live in the little girl? If so, why didn't they know it? If not, where were they before she died? As the little people try to find food and shelter in the forest around the body, things deteriorate quickly. Some fall victim to the wildlife around them. Some fall victim to each other as anarchy reigns. Some fall victim to stupidity. Every time I thought it had gotten as gruesome as possible I was proven wrong. The little people turn on each other and by the end there is only one left, who may or may not be a crazy murderer living with a murderer. Highly fascinating and disturbing and awesome. I would definitely recommend it, but it is not for the faint of heart.

The title is apt - the watercolor illustrations are gorgeous and beautiful and the story celebrates darkness in all its forms. I don't know if it is due to being translated into English, but the plot/story is non-existent. It also seems to revel in its own horror and leaves any sort of character development out in the cold - literally. While I shrieked with horrified joy when I hit page 8 (BRILLIANT), the story completely falls apart at that point. Characters are slaughtered at a moment's notice, the fat character is "always hungry" - it's just a stupid, sad story with one really brilliant plot twist.

......I don't even know. This was so strange and dark, like REALLY dark, and I mean yes, beautiful, but holy hell.
