Everyone seems to like this but I find the lack of question answering unsatisfying. It lays out questions, it lays out intense topics, and then never goes into them at all. It exists in a world where things happen and seem to have an overarching link but in the end none is ever made. I came out thinking I must be missing something, and I don't think in a good way, even if the art is good.
I should have expected it from the title, but the darkness within this graphic novel still managed to take me by surprise. Especially because it contrasts largely with the cutesy illustrations and imagery. Their juxtaposition is jarring and bizarre. It makes the cruelty, greed and disinterest of the characters hit a lot harder. Yet at the same time, it's very beautifully presented - so we never expect it. Some of the scenes outright shocked me and made me cry out from sadness. You'd think I would have learned to keep expecting the bad things, wouldn't you? But I really didn't. I held out hope right till the very end.
I think it's fair to say it leaves the reader with a lot of questions. It's one of those that offers little closure in terms of plot and the whys and hows. If you don't mind reading something like that, and enjoy reading about horror; then I recommend this to you. However, it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea.

This is seriously one of the most disturbing comic books I've ever read. The combination of sweet, adorable artwork and horrifically upsetting events was intense. I don't even know if I really liked it but it's going to be with me for a long time.
