How do I even begin to review this book? It seems unfair to give it a negative review just because overly creepy and pessimistic things are not my jam, it was what it was aiming for. And I did not go in blind, reading the "summery" on the back and flipping through a few pages. Yet it made my stomach turn and will surly give me nightmares this week, that's not an exaggeration, I can see many of these images and situations being twisted and entering my dreams. But if that is the thing you are looking for this book will certainly deliver!
However, I can't say I am filled with remorse for reading it. This dark view on the animalistic nature of humanity (as the book seems to allegorize, many reviews have compared it to Lord of the Flies) is not the kind of content I wish to put out into the world, nor is it the kind I like to experience. Still, I believe in expanding my view and getting outside my comfort zone. Perhaps I can view it as a cautionary tale. Not to be ignorantly innocent like tiny Aurora is in the beginning, but to be wary of the evil that people can be driven to, in order to avoid snapping and become cruel and out only for myself as she is in the end.

the dark humor made me giggle a lil ngl, but the scenes changed every 2 pages so it was hard to follow the story at times

Absolutely jaw dropping.
I kind of wish there was more to the ending.

this is a bizarre little story
sort of like the borrowers: now with 200% more murder!
anyways afaict when a little girl dies all the imaginary figures in her head escape out and things proceed to get disturbing
i'm not really sure i see the point? i mean there's some shock value in the contrast of the art (pretty watercolours) with the content (ALL the death!) but. ehhh. don't fairytales usually have some sort of ultimate message?
unless the message is 'little girls' imaginations: MORE creepy then you'd think!'
the art really is lovely though. and i suppose there's a market out there for dark/horror fairytales, angela carter's been making a pretty good living off it
