I liked the premise of the book as a fairytale that takes place in present day. But I really didn't like the style of narration because it rambled.

read this for school and couldn’t finish it
it’s not that bad but i hate the class so

And old book that perhaps I’m reading with modern eyes, but I will never love it when the only female character is basically silent for the whole story and just get lectured at by men and then somehow fall in love with one of men that’s just lectured her the whole book… but that’s me.

You know the section about cetology in Moby Dick? This book is like that about Eucalyptus trees but throughout the whole book. So boring. So much patriarchal nonsense. Reads like a throwback to the beginning of the century. How it won a major prize I cannot imagine.
reflective slow-paced

I enjoyed the first few chapters. There are even some nice facts about trees. But the sexism! Our heroine is valued for: looking pretty, listening to men, obeying the father, and falling mysteriously ill.

Lyrical, imaginative, mixing both our love of storytelling & classification, lucid yet intellectual.

This is a gorgeous book. Shimmering, humid and rich. Engaging, classic storytelling and beautiful imagery - it depicts an Australia that is equally harsh and gentle, arid and lush.
