Patricia Reilly Giff is one of my favorite middle grade authors. She is able to bring the past alive with engaging characters and fascinating stories. I find her very engaging and I thoroughly enjoy all her books.

I fell in love with this book when I was 8 or 9 years old. It was my favorite book for at least 3 years, and it was the book I came back to repeatedly. So far, Lily's Crossing is the only book I've encountered like that. I remember how touching it was, and that it brought tears to my eyes every time I read it. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a preteen age child.

LILY’S CROSSING ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I read this middle grade book as part of my personal challenge to read books recommended by my family. My sister read LILY’S CROSSING in elementary school and asked me to read this milestone, childhood book. I loved the different layers of the story. Lily is an American girl living out adventures on her summer vacation during WW2. So much of her world comes undone, but Lily’s spirit, hopefulness, and spunkiness prevail.

A solid book about a girl in World War II and the Hungarian refugee boy that she befriends, somewhat reluctantly.

The characterization was excellently done. I loved how Lily recognized that she was a liar and that this behavior was alienating her from others, but just couldn't bring herself to stop. Her emotions and behaviors towards her father and grandmother felt very realistic. Albert's worries and obsessions felt real as well, along with his willful self-delusion that his plan will take him to Europe.

The settings was well done, clearly placing the book in the world of the war and the specific milieu of the beach community.

The themes of friendship, truth, and family are solid.

Very interesting book to give children a glance into heartache and loss, and some of the reaches of war.
