This book completely exceeded my expectations. I wasn't sure what to expect, but Ms Tina has lead such a fascinating life and is a wonderful storyteller. I loved learning about her family history, her life, and her attitude towards mothering and raising her daughters. There is a lot to take from this book, I will be revisiting.

Ms. Tina Knowles has lived such an amazing life. In the beginning, I was in awe reading about how her family’s history and story had been passed down generation to generation. As a Black American who does not know much about my own family’s history, I was teary-eyed and happy to see how much knowing where you came from to show you where you're going. Reading about the early days of designing Destiny’s Child’s outfits, I am shocked (though not surprised) reading how much the label and others downplaying how iconic their outfits were! So many people tried to make Ms. Tina seem like her designs were too “country” or too “urban”. In fact, reading about how the label treated Destiny’s Child, even though they were successful when they were an R&B group to when they crossed over to Pop, the label still tried to make it seem like their Blackness and countryness was holding them back or they were anomalies for becoming as popular as they are despite those things.

I always knew how much of a business woman Ms. Tina is and after reading the book, I was nowhere near close to how much she has accomplished! Her business ventures and extremely impressive and I do agree with the girls that Ms. Tina is truly a bad bitch (respectfully). Some other things that stood out to me in the book:
  • Reading about her marriage to Mathew…imma be respectful, but lord, she did deserve better and I’m glad they're in a better place.
  • Stories about Johnny were great and I can see how he had such a profound presence in the family and it adds another layer to why Renaissance is such a great body of work: its a tribute to what seemed like an amazing person.
  • Solange has been through a lot at such a young age😭
  • Those nuns were bitches!
  • Her wedding (with Mathew) is cluttered with sooo many situations. They were def going through it that day!

In all, this was a great and reflective memoir of an accomplished businesswoman, a designer, and most important of all, a matriarch.
