I don't normally review memoirs, but this one was exceptional, and I'm not just saying that because I am a huge fan of Beyoncé. It was fascinating to learn about the mother who brith this global superstar. Ms. Tina is such a strong woman, taking us through her life from her youthful days in Galveston to the years we got to know her with Destiny's Child and beyond.

Ms. Tina's story reflects the experiences of many Black mothers who are everything to their children and families. Throughout every phase of her life, her family was her source of strength, and she loved them deeply. I listened to the audio version, which was beautifully narrated by Ms. Tina herself. You could truly feel every ounce of her emotion as she read certain parts of her life.

If you haven’t read "Matriarch" yet, I definitely recommend you check it out!

This book was such a beautiful look behind the curtain into Ms. Tina’s life. At times it reminded me of sitting around the kitchen table or the living room with my grandmas and listening to family stories. It also made me appreciate all the music Solange, Beyoncé, DC, and Kelly made. Listening to Ms. Tina learn about taking care of herself and exploring her relationship with her own mother was a welcome reflection and reminder that mother-daughter relationships are difficult and so important. I’m excited to dig more into the fashion and outfits she designed and learn more about the philanthropy she’s doing too.

The book succeeded in feeling like a collection of hilariously charming, though slightly long winded, stories from your favorite auntie or grandma.

I enjoyed learning about Ms. Tina’s early life and just how much she did to support her daughters. As Ms. Tina shared  her insecurities, I rooted even more for her to realized she’s Bad Ass Teeny Bee! I suspect for privacy reasons there are a lot of context and details that Ms. Tina does not include. I think it shows how much she wants to protect her family even while telling her story. I loved hearing about her life being a fabulous bad ass at 70!
