I really liked the pace of this book. I couldn't put the book down for the last 250 pages. I was all for the ending until the named the next queen. what the hell was that? Didn't make any sense.

I wanted to like Valley so much but I really couldn’t. I LOVED LOVED the first two books, but Valley just went totally off the rail and I couldn’t enjoy it as much. In the first half, there was just too much of the chasm and the second half had big secrets revealed but it still didn’t help with my confusion of the direction this book went in. I’m still going to read McEwan’s new book but I’m so sad how disappointing this final book was.

The whole series was slow and insufferable. The original premise was interesting but in general, it just fell short. Lack of depth in the character building and their relationships with each other. I just started skimming to get this book over with and it’s only rated higher than the first two since it finally had some resolution and at long last, came to a conclusion.
I won’t be rereading this series.

This book was slow. Too much time spent doing nothing. Dawsyn is in the chasm for 172 pages. That's almost half the book. Nothing whatsoever happens in that chasm. Nothing that matters, at least.
The backstories and surprises for how everyone connected were interesting, but I think instead of essentially an entire book of them (after book 2 was also quite a bit of this), it could have been done better. Yennes's story was interesting. Possibly the most interesting part of the series. Maybe we could have had more of her and cut out everything with Ruby and Cressida's secret plans. I also don't think getting Cressida or Alvira's POVs was worthwhile. Basically, don't have Ruby get captured and just cut all of the stuff with the queens. Have them be villains who aren't particularly fleshed out. Because learning more about them didn't make them more interesting or engaging.
I think this trilogy would have been better served as a duology. Chasm and Valley could have been significantly shortened and merged into one book.
All said and done though, the ending was decent. I appreciated that Dawsyn didn't make some big sacrifice. Yennes making it was weird though since we had specifically been told it had to be someone with mage blood. I would have liked more Yerdos. I think with the small bit we got it would have been better not having her at all. It felt random and unfinished.

While reading Chasm, I assumed it was slow due to a lot of setup for the conclusion of the series. In my review of Chasm I said
Valley has a lot of buildup and could/should be very satisfying. Hopefully it doesn't disappoint.
Sadly, it kinda did.
