I liked this book. I find the story very enthralling. The only complaint about this book is that there is too much traveling. She is journeying to & fro constantly in this book & the story starts to lag a little. I love Dimitri & I hope that she ends up with him. Looking forward to the next installment!
Started this on the beach today and couldn't put it down till I finished it tonight. Cannot wait till the end to see how the prophecy will be resolved.
Michelle Zink did it again. I've read this book in 24 hours and man, I loved it.
If you ask me where I'm from, I'll say either Spain or Catalonia. But I've never actually liked being born here, I've always felt like an "international citizen." I don't even read books in Spanish but then again, I choose to read this saga in Spanish. Why? Well, look. at. the. covers. They are beautiful. I do not only enjoy reading the books, but I love seeing them on my shelf. (I would like to point out that MarĂa Teresa Marcos Bermejo, the translator, did an awesome job with this book. Thumb up for the editorial, Anaya, for their great translation, beautiful cover and amazing edition.)
Okay, so enough praising the Spanish edition for "Guardian of the Gate" (or "Angel of Chaos," as we Spaniards have it). I would like to say I love both the writing, the characters AND the story. I usually dislike main characters, but Lia is lovely, and her new love interest - Dimitri Markov (I love tha name) is ugh. Awesome. If anyone knows a real-life DImitri Markov please introduce him to me.
In this new book of the saga we get to know about Altus, the Gregory, the sisters and the prophecy. I've read tons of books that try to give the reader insights and information about the book, and it gets boring (as much as I love The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, everything about Idris, the Institute and all the nephilim's rules and history are a bit boring to me), but Zink knows how to write about this so you don't get sick of it. I actually surprised myself wanting to know more about the Gregory, and wanting Lia to stay in Altus "a bit longer" to know more about their history. I do hope we get more info in the last book of the saga.
Besides Altus, and the journey to the island, we also get the bad vibes of Alice. And I am sorry Lia, you are lovely and cute and I love you, but Alice is awesome too. She appears from time to time just to remind the reader (and Lia) who's in charge. I do hope we'll get more of her.
I am very excited for the next book since Elena Castillo is finally going to appear (I guess?). I said I don't feel like I belong in Spain, but I live here, so reading about a Spanish character will make me happy lol
PS: I am not rating this with 5 stars because I'm a bit angry about Lia leaving James, and I feel this book should've been longer? Like, I would've liked to know more about everything it treated and the characters (Luisa and Rhys, Garrett, Emrys, Edmund...)

This book felt very different than the first book, and for a while I was even questioning whether there was a book in between that I had missed. The story is much more developed but seems quite detached from the original concept. I strongly disliked how much "destiny" played in this story, how everything felt "right" and "familiar". It got old and cliche really fast.
However disjointed it all felt with new love interest included, I liked the adventure and movement (at first it felt slow, but I think that is a side effect of first person) and am looking forward to the next book.

Steady and continuous pacing without being meandering and insubstantial like some middle books of trilogies can feel. Although there was lots happening it did still feel somewhat like a bridging book, but without losing interest along the way. Some aspects were a little lacking, however overall I still enjoyed it.
I liked it quite a bit better than I remember liking the first book in the series. But by the end, Zink's writing style got kind of irritating for some reason.
