Michael Connelly consistently crafts compelling and engaging mysteries. I like how he brings current (and not so current) affairs into his books- the COVID pandemic, the devastation in Lahaina, and even the iconic Black Dahlia m*rder.

I am really enjoying the evolution of Renee Ballard’s character. It took me a minute to warm up to her character, having been practically a life-long fan of Harry Bosch, but she’s growing on me. Maddie Bosch shows up in this one, joining the open-unsolved unit under Ballard’s command.

The team faces so many dangerous elements in THE WAITING, and they are individually tried as they push against unfair bureaucracy, personal tragedies, and the ever-present criminal element alive and thriving in the city of Angels.

I would have liked to see a little more Bosch in this book; I miss his rebellion and stoic sense of humour and his conniving against the powers-that-be. Even so, Connelly shows up with excellent writing and a fast-paced crime story that kept me awake long after lights out.
