Even though there are broadly three different plots at play here, the book is a fast, entertaining read. Not happy though about the course of events used to solve the last storyline of the book.

I really loved how this book played out. It is SO visual. It gets me hyped for Season Two of Ballard. BTW, my wife and I loved S1. We will be rewatching it soon.
The TV adaptation of the character Renée Ballard, the different storyliness from the books (now six of them) and the inclusion of Harry Bosch, Mickey Haller, and others. They have not made a one-to-one adaptation, which allows for the book fans to continue to be surprised by the adaptation, but also...as the show grows in popularity, the viewers will pick up the books, and still be surprised by the original stories (so good). They have so many great stories to tell...and I feel that the story told in this book, will be a great one, but one that I hope comes in season four or five. Please, not next season. Please.
I know that conflict is the basis of good storytelling, but man...does Renée keep getting punched down to by her bosses (and she continues to show up and show out).
There are characters that die. Yes, it wouldn't be as impactful if they didn't. The areas of investigation, allows for the peope involved to be exposed (in a sense), and this is realistic to the overall story (for sure).
The book does a good job...showing that Renée is not a "goodie two-shoes", but she also has an ethical standard that the readers take unto themselves as they are reading the story. We are like some of the characters that Bosch, Ballard, Haller, McEvoy, McCaleb and now, Detective Stillwell...which I will be picking up, next.
Oh, one last thing about this story, Maddie Bosch in the TV adaptation was superbly played by Madison Lintz, but she's different in the books (which is totally okay). I like them both, but not everyone does. I get it. We see more of her in the TV series, and so some people don't like her. That's their choice. My wife and I really like her. Does she do stupid things? Yes, but so do our three grown children, and we still love them.
I liked how they spotlighted Maddie in this story, and I hope she shows up more regularly in this book series (Renée Ballard) and also in the TV adaption (Ballard).
Okay, I will continue on in the Harry Bosch universe with Detective Stillwell (new character) 01 Nightshade that just came out. I look forward to this new addition to this universe...and am excited to see how it incorporates established characters of the past (for or against). I'm in.

Really enjoyed Connolly as an author. I saw some mixed reviews shortly before finishing this book. I’m not sure why as I thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact, I’m excited to read more from him.
I most enjoyed getting straight to the story and then keeping you involved in everything along the way. There were no unnecessary details. Everything just got completely in place. I saw there are more books about the same characters so I am intrigued to read more. Great story!

a fun read! twisty enough without feeling gratuitous and with a great combination of factual and fictional crime. i’ll be venturing into connelly’s backlist more this year for sure
