I always thoroughly enjoy reading a Harry Bosch novel, he is complex, deep, and always goes with his gut. I have to admit that I am not a huge Renee Ballard fan, but I will read the books just to get some elements of Bosch. And with The Waiting, I got two Boschs for the price of one. This book also included Maddie Bosch as a primary character in the novel. She is a young force to be reckoned with and is looking to make a name for herself outside of her father’s shadow. I can appreciate Ballard’s position as the only enforcement officer in the LAPD’s Open-Unsolved Unit and I love her passion for surfing. Interestingly, both Ballard and Bosch have troubled relationships/memories of their mothers, probably what brings them together. The Waiting had multiple plot stories that made the book move along at a good pace, with no dull moments at all. A good element of suspense, especially with Ballard’s badge, gun, and ID being stolen while she is surfing. Since the group is dealing with open and unsolved cases, Maddie ends up discovering some interesting evidence about an infamous real-life murder mystery. It almost intrigued me to read and research more about the history of this case. I don’t want to mention it and give the storyline away. I enjoy watching the Bosch and Bosch: Legacy series on Prime Video. And I can appreciate the actors Titus Welliver (Bosch) and Madison Lintz ( Maddie Bosch) narrating their roles in this book, it made the characters come to life. Amazon is in development to start a new spin-off series for the Renee Ballard character and the part will be played by the actress Maggie Q! She was one of my favorite characters in the Divergent series and I cannot wait to watch this spin-off.
