What a great addition to the Harry Bosch Universe. Lots of twists and turns as Maddie Bosch joins Renee Ballard's cold case squad.

This episode isn’t as strong as many of Connelly’s novels.  I know Connelly is struggling to release Bosch, but his appearance in this novel feels forced, as does the entire subplot with the lost badge.  I truly hope he keeps writing Ballard novels; she is ready to fly on her own.

Reneé has settled in as leader of a cold case unit staffed mainly by volunteers. Harry is a relatively minor character, but we can see the Maddie-Renee partnership being started and having a flying start. As Harry is older and in uncertain health, we can see the next generation (Maddie) taking over with Renee as a solid partner. The plot itself is interesting, with a mix of a very cold case and a very old but still active case. Genetics has become a solid tool here and becomes an essential tool in leading to the guilty party. This one flows quickly and as usual, it doesn't matter who the featured character is - there is always office politics being a major obstacle.
