An enthralling, slow burn paranormal fantasy, THE SCARLET VEIL is perfect for lovers of vampires and gothic elements. The story takes place after the SERPENT & DOVE series and follows Célie as she attempts to overcome her trauma and join the ranks of the Chasseurs as their first female hunter.
Célie is a good character because while she tries to emulate the other women in her life, she is her own person. Watching her grow to realize this is a rewarding experience, because I was always interested in her. As she's thrown into a situation she is truly not prepared for, it was rewarding to see her persevere in her own way.
Michal is intriguing and intense, unapologetic in his rule. I enjoyed his interactions with Célie as he tried to keep her out of trouble, which led to engaging scenes between the two of them. The side characters are layered and unique, and while I was glad to see old faces, it was fun to meet new characters.
The world is elegant, dark, and captivating. The prose is solid and the pacing, while on the slower scale, is nonetheless right for this sort of story. Even when there wasn't a lot of action, I was never bored and always wanted to read more. The ending was intense and I am ready to see what happens next.
This is a great book for anyone who is familiar with the SERPENT & DOVE series, but I think it still holds up on its own and should not be missed, especially if you love gothic romances, vampires, and anything supernatural!

I read 2 books from the previous series by the author and then gave up-ish. Again, I loved the first book of her series and I really hope I'll continue with this time.
Anyway, the review itself is that I loved the characters in this book. I remembered little about them but I don't think you need the previous series to connect to the characters here. The plot made us leave the og-group of friends for a large part of the book but I am glad I still like their relationship and that I wasn't mad at this part of the plot. The women shined here (Mila - Odessa - Lou - Coco) and I think I will need even more of them. I liked Michal as well , he made me really intrigued. I am also glad to read about Reid cause by the second book of S&D, I was starting to like him less. Jean Luc, nooo comment. Overall, I think the author put good characters here but they needed more development cause only the F-MC developed enough in my opinion.
The world here was really interesting and I enjoyed all the conversations with the ghosts. The idea of the evil character was good as well so I liked the plot not surprising that much but still well done.
For the plot, I think it stalled a little bit but the conversations carried this part so that didn't lower my rating of the book.
For the romance, I am glad that it progressed that way cause I really hate when fantasy books go: attraction -> physical relationship -> miscommunication -> end (in romance, some do it well though). I liked how he acted as well (not as in loved his actions but how he was true to what you know of a vampire). I really hope the romance in the next book will be more unique cause I know how this type of romance normally goes.
The author's writing still keeps me engaged all the time and even make smile/laugh at some points so it's a win in my book. Also, the audiobook was great.

Ehhhhhhhhh it’s aight
It had its good moments and it had the moments that made me roll my eyes. In the end, the good parts were not enough to save my opinion on this book. I am at least glad it wasn’t a terrible waste of my time.
The romance: nah thank you
The world: confusing and I feel that though it is claimed this book can be read without reading the S&D series, that those books would help add A LOT of context.
Also because I have to compare everything to something, it’s givinggggg TVD and Twilight, which I did not need right after Midnight is the Darkest Hour.
