I wasn't expecting to enjoy THIS MUCH to go back to this universe but YES it was a total blast! I loved to follow the characters I already appreciated so much but how I loved to find out more about Célie! I can't wait for next March to find out what happens next!!!
This was excellent. Solid 4 stars because I always think Mahurin is a little too long winded.
I am sick of books with cliffhangers, there have been so many this year

A girl with good morals is being lied to by her friends.
This is a SPIN-OFF SERIES after Serpent & Dove, and I was kicking myself for not having read that trilogy first.
However, it's only the relationships, that you may not understand, if you haven't read it too.
Triggers are: murder, death, resurrection, sibling loss, among others.
Célie works on a murder investigation for the Chasseurs (huntsmen, yes, she's the sole woman there).
The story was interesting enough. Starts slow, but picks up later. There's also a lot of Smoke and Mirrors, not all is as it seems, and not all suspects are guilty.
The book doesn't consist of only humans and vampires. There are many magical creatures, as side characters, for example: blood witches, merpeople and werewolves.
A fault, that I've noticed, is that there are no chapter dividers. It goes from one scene to another in two lines, in a new paragraph.
I read the .epub, and there were no illustrations. Perhaps that is something to consider, when publishing a YA book.
Realised, that I was not invested enough in what would happen next. I also initially thought that this book was not going to be memorable, however, I was mistaken.
I felt the story to be borderlining on NA, rather than YA.
It's a good book, objectively. Vampires have come a long way since Twilight or The Vampire Diaries.
This book made me realise that both men and women can be wicked, and dip their toes in criminal activity. It also brought my awareness to the fact that at any time of day, I could potentially be kidnapped. And this is just my POV, it could happen to basically, anyone. Kidnapping and death know no age.
It also crossed my mind, that vampires aren't technically alive. They're undead, living in the afterlife.
As the ending drew nearer and nearer, the chapters tended to end of cliffhangers, at which I was holding my breath for the anticipation of the turn of events, and I had to take breaks in between, as I'm not emotionally strong enough to withstand certain situations.
The ending itself, was ridiculously unrealistic. Completely horrifying.
