Hmm. I really like Steven Rowley’s writing but this one one fell flat for me. The characters all felt more like archetypes than believable characters. Also, there wasn’t enough buildup or context for me to feel invested in their obstacles. The premise was fine but I would have liked more scenes outside of the funeral pact ones. I almost DNF but persevered because I was more than halfway through. It’s not a bad book but I felt a bit disappointed by it.

This was an uplifting read. A few moments that were unbelievable but overall good character development.
3.89 ⭐️ but couldn’t round up to a full four.
A bit of a slow burn and I liked the other works I’ve read of the author’s better. I struggled to get through the first half, the second half moved a little quicker. It was a kind story of friendship, but I needed just a little bit more throughout.

A touching and heartwrenching character-driven story that reflects on the fleeting nature of humanity, celebrating what makes life worth living, and the power of enduring friendships
I am on a roll and not in a good way. Made it 60% of the way through this book, and when I was cleaning my house to avoid reading it, I knew I just did not care enough about the narrative or the characters. For adults, who have lived full lives, they lacked the depth and maturity one expects to find. Such a wonderful idea for a story, but poorly executed from this reader’s perspective.
I really appreciate Rowley's writing. I did not enjoy this as much as "The Guncle" but it has some important messages and beautiful passages. I didn't "love" all the characters and that was difficult for me.
I wanted to love but I didn’t. I kept waiting for it to get better. It didn’t. Why is not there a DNF option! It is no Guncle.
