Nonsense poems for the littles!

My favorite book of nonsense verse and one of my favorite books of all time even now as an adult. Wallace Tripp's writings are far more memorable and enjoyable than the traditional nursery rhymes.

It is fun and wondrous and whimsical. Everyone should read nonsense even if just as a reminder not to take themselves too seriously, that the world and everyone in it are often absurd and it's a sad, terrible thing not to be able to laugh at ourselves.

Sadly, these aren't poems by Tripp, but simply a collection that he put together. The good news is that it is chock full of his wonderful illustrations! As always, they are an utter delight!

This was my absolute favorite book as a child, and I have a pretty large fraction of the poems it contains memorized. Unfortunately my copy was lost in the mail (in a box of all my childhood books). I would love to find another copy to read to my son...

Absolutely my favorite poetry book when I was a kid. I still remember many of the poems, and recite them to my kids often.

I have read this books so many times that most of it is memorized. My mom bought it for me when I was a kid and now I share it with my students. It's funny, as you read it, Kindergarteners will just sit there and patiently listen. First graders will wet their pants with laughter and beg for more - the older you get the weirder it is - and if you are like me, the poems come out just when you need them. Like when you see your friend drop cucumber on her chest while scarfing her salad - Little Miss Bantry sitting in the pantry... Or if anyone says they hate peas... Well I eat mine with honey... I could go on. Yes. I can. Like on a bad day when everything seems to go wrong - all for a nail! Yes my darling daughter...

One of my favourite books as a kid. I loved the rhymes and you can spend hours looking at Tripp's wonderful illustrations - there's just so much detail. I can still recite some of the verses from heart.

A LOL collection of verse for children with pictures as funny as the poetry. Tripp’s use of mostly animal characters as well as a few human caricatures are a delight for all ages. To pick just one example, in the two page spread for “Hannah Bantry in the panty,” Hanna, a cat wearing a tiara is greedily gnawing at a bone all to herself, while out in the grand dining room a collection of foxes, cats, and badgers are seated at a grand dining room table, all of them with their noses up in the air and looking quite snooty. Behind them a guilt frame upon the wall is a painting of a family of lions strolling before a woodland waterfall. The painting’s title is “Pride Goeth Before a Fall.”
