Winterblaze

Love this book. Have basically read it a second time to get out of a reading slump. The characters are interesting and have compelling motivation. There's lots going on but the story is focused and fun and entertaining. Love how strong the heroine is and her dynamic relationship with her husband and sisters and how she threatens the bad guy.

This is what i look for in a spicy book.

At long last Winterblaze has arrived, and with it mystery, demons, a hair cut, and some hot sex. Callihan continues her Darkest London series right where she left off, layering plots together in perfect balance that will leave you begging for more.

Poppy and Winston have walked dangerous paths, now with their trust broken and Winston’s eyes open they must work together to defeat an age old enemy. Don’t be fooled, even with an underlying message of trust this is no simple paranormal.

Poppy has put her position above everything in her life, and she has had enough. She draws the line at giving up her husband and goes after him, if only (she tells herself) to keep him safe. When Winston’s dark secret is brought out in the light of day a new set of problems is hers to deal with. Now, she has the choice to do what she always has done and do it herself...or allow herself to rely on another to have her back.

Winston is a man of honor, stuck on it a bit actually. When a man from his past comes collecting, his whole world comes crashing down. You will fall in love with Win, equally as much as you want to punch him. True marks of a well written character, to bring out such strong emotion in the reader. Just as Poppy has choices to make, he must decide what he is willing to sacrifice. Choices choices.

For any paranormal steampunk fans out there Winterblaze is a great addition to the Darkest London series. Too bad we once again have to wait!

The plot kind of ruined it for me as I never accepted that Winston would have made such a deal.
Spoiler And if made while drugged and not in his right mind, I don't see it as being valid. And his kid's soul...
I cannot accept bargaining someone else's soul. Some of the twists at the end were good but how they stumbled upon them, not so much.

So along with the plot that got slightly better at the end, I didn't really like the characters most of the way through.. Their back and forth of guilt and whether the other one could accept... it just took away from them getting together. It was good for a moment but then kind of fizzled. Having the possibility that Poppy didn't love Win was a good twist but pretty much the only good thing for me in the relationship. Getting over their lies and the way they did it, just took any spark away.

So I had to pull myself to come back to this several times and it took a least a week to get through. Sometimes this is just because of timing but this was total lack of interest. I finished it and it was OK most of the way through and only truly good in a few parts.

Updates while reading==============

40% in and a bit disappointed both with how the two do/don't come together, then the turn.
Spoiler The demon shows up and says you made this deal 14 years ago. Winston never would have made that deal. Then... he decides to make an open ended deal and at the end the demon say, 'you have 4 days to find this woman or I get your first born?' What? If he already had the deal then why, why doesn't he just take the first born, period. Really? It is just so convoluted and out of characters.
This convoluted plot turn that is out of character actually took the slight care for the characters to disliking them both. Either the plot turn is a trick or I cannot take this.

Really enjoyed this one. Good balance with the leads and a clever resolution.

I did not enjoy this one as much as the previous 2 novels in this series. Winston and Poppy just didn't engage me the way the others did, and I found myself skimming through to get to the end. That said, this wasn't a bad book, and I am looking forward to the next in the series featuring Jack and Mary.

Could not get into this...tried to read it again tonight and ended up watching X-Files instead. The flashbacks are what killed it for me...I am super impatient with them, personal preference though.
