I liked that it made me reconsider some areas of my home in terms of accommodating children (and fostering independence!) and provided ideas for tweaks I can make to my home so it's more kid friendly. But I think she wrote it with a larger home in mind considering she has separate chapters for the living room, family room, laundry room, AND home office.

As the mom of a toddler with a small apartment, I initially was very put off by this book, especially because of the beautiful photographs of large, unbabyproofed interiors. And all the "art" with cheesy inspirational messages.

But once I read further (and tried to tune out the photography), I found the book filled with practical advice about organizing your space. And as someone who knows very very little about home decorating, I appreciated the breakdown of the virtues of different materials, like for rugs or kitchen chairs.

I do wish some attention was devoted to babyproofing and apartment-living, though. That said, I think it's a great resource for home-owners with older children.

I love Gabrielle Blair's blog, design mom, and was eagerly awaiting the release of her book. It did not disappoint. Her blog series on living with kids is something I look forward to reading each week. This book breaks down all the ways to have a beautiful, full, well-lived home and life that embraces your family rather than hides or apologizes for their existence. I dogeared dozens of pages and made notes throughout on all the fantastic ideas offered here. Blair is not only a designer but also a mother of six children and her advice comes from a wealth and lifetime of experience living with them all across the globe. Her voice as a writer is so inviting and sincere. The photography and layout of the book is gorgeous but also feels attainable and full of character, not like a sterile magazine shoot or Pinterest photo with no evidence of the people who actually live in the space. I'm sure I'll be referring to this book frequently as we continue to make home improvements!

Practical easily implementable ideas

This book have me several very handy ideas for simple and inexpensive remedies for some common "problem" areas when living with children. I have already implemented several and my mind is turning over her design ideas for future projects to improve our use of the space we have.

Some beautiful ideas for a home, and some good organizing ideas to get your gears moving... in her written words. But caution if you look at the photos. if you expect examples/ideas of things that are realistic with (especially, young) kids, they are not here.

Mostly read this because the author’s Instagram (@designmom) is one of my favorites. Not for design but for her French house restoration. I enjoyed looking through this although I’m in an apartment by myself. A lot of the suggestions make sense and aren’t things that are often considered when furnishing a house with kids, or even with just lots of people like roommates.
