dark emotional mysterious medium-paced

Special thanks to Minotaur Books for the advance copy in exchange of an honest review.

The Woman In The Mirror by Rebecca James is one of the creepiest books I have read in a long time. It even beats Soren Sveistrup’s The Chestnut Man. I had zero expectations going into this ghost mystery and came out pleasantly surprised.

Told in two perspectives, The Woman In The Mirror will lead you through quite the mystery. The plot slowly builds piece by piece, twist by twist until you are left with one fantastic ending.

The house itself, Winterbourne, makes this story. It is haunted by an evil witch who took her life to avoid persecution by the man she loved. Therefore, the house focuses on driving the women insane and uses the children to do some of the bidding.

Recommendation: The Woman In The Mirror is heartbreaking and tragic in so many ways. Read it especially if you like spooky, ghost stories.

The Woman in the Mirror is a clean historical fiction book, a gothic tale with touches of the paranormal. It has all the elements that make for a good story in this genre, and I found it satisfying reading.

This book was recommended to me as being in the same vein as Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca. It is told in two timelines, one of which (set in the 1940s) is indeed somewhat similar to Rebecca. I enjoyed the book well enough and wish I could have seen the painting that is mentioned throughout. It wasn't a masterpiece in any way, but the creepy atmosphere was conveyed well.

This book reminded me of why I love Gothic fiction so much. Really, really enjoyed this one.

Reminded me Susanna Kearsley, but not engaging enough for me to continue.

I won an ARC of this book in a Goodreads giveaway. All opinions are my own.

(3.5 stars) The Woman in the Mirror was a pretty fast read and it kept my interest throughout. Alice's storyline was especially interesting and there was a lot of rich detail about her life. I could've done without the romantic plots in Rachel's story, especially because it seemed like both men were telling her what they thought she should do and then she would just go along with it instead of really making her own decisions. Also, for a book called The Woman in the Mirror, you don't even learn about this woman until right before the end and although the mirror does pop up throughout the book and people think they look weird in it, that's it and nothing really crazy happens. The house becomes its own character which adds to the gothic feel and I thought that worked well. The ending was kind of anticlimatic, when Rachel's life was in danger it resolved quickly with little conflict or tension. But the book did end on a bit of a cliffhanger which I appreciated.

I would recommend this book if you're looking for a gothic atmosphere that's slightly unsettling but not too scary.

This was a solid, straight down the middle, 2.5 star read for me.

The book is broken up between two perspectives as we travel back and forth between two different time periods. One was much more of a compelling read than the other, with plenty of spooky ambience and well thought out characters I would have liked to have spent more time with.

The other half of the story read a lot more like a romance novel with a lot of the predictability that can come with one but none of the substance. We were only with these characters for a short while in order to move the (predictable) plot along.

It was a worth while read for the few chills and atmospheric descriptions of the towering manor that are there. But definitely not a book I'll be reaching for again.

I liked this dual story of discovery. As we watch two timelines play out and find out how they are connected.

It was a little sinister at points but not as scary as I’d wanted it to be!
