an incredible story - a rare moment of healthcare systems working in a patients favor, and told with such grace and humility.
If you were a fan of House M.D., and you ever wondered what it was like for the patients in the show, this is the book to read.

Wow I loved this. Medical mystery, but inspiring, I couldn’t stop listening to it, also takes place in Summit so that was fun. Crazy story and so scary but so fascinating and well written. Definitely recommend

Susannah is a journalist who creates the real-life narrative of what happened to her brain over the course of months as a young adult. As she cannot remember it all, this is based on what she and others recollect and other inputs like videos and journals.
The brain is a complex organ. Reading along Susannah's journey, you feel for her, and she writes in a way that isn't too technical to keep you engaged. Brain on Fire also touches upon different types of doctors and the importance of having a support network.
Susannah's book is helping others to better understand not only the specific neurological condition she had, but about how people can change, how hard it is to diagnose, and how we all can be more aware for ourselves and people we advocate for, and how to support recovery.

I had seen the movie, and that was also very well made but I lacked the context given by Susannah’s narration.

Could not put this down- I read the whole thing in about 24 hours
A curious combination of memoir and reportage, Brain on Fire tells of the author's dealing with a mysterious illness that causes her to lose her "self". While there isn't as much mystery as one might like, as we know Cahalan survived her ordeal and was able to write the present book, I think she does a good job of showing how important medical research and continuing education are to the treatment of patients (not to mention good beside manner). Also, to her credit, she acknowledges how lucky she was in getting to the right place at the right time for help, and that not everyone is that fortunate. I liked the book and would read more of her work.
