This was my first John Gwynne book, and needless to say, I was not disappointed. It was a very character-driven story, and there wasn't a whole lot of action until the last chunks of the book. That being said, I did enjoy getting to know who was who in the story, but it was difficult at times to keep up because so many characters had a POV. Obviously, Corban had a big role, and I enjoyed his narrative the most. The world was unique, and I thought the use of Christian and Judeo (among others) history was done well. I enjoyed the writing here as well. After finishing this one, I'm definitely excited to see what will happen over the course of the next three installments.

Starting this series was a bit daunting as it is a thick one but I am very glad I started this!

The first 300 pages were slow and confusing. Not much was happening, it was very hard to keep track of all the characters, and there were small time hops in the storyline that took a minute to grasp. While at times this was hard to get through I was prepared for it. I’m familiar with the author’s work and the first book of his series are always slow.

The last half of the book for sure made up for the slow start! The action and the plotting was superb!! I love a good fantasy series with a hero origin story, a villain who thinks his cause is righteous, and multiple characters at play all with their own agendas!

Looking forward to continuing this story as just after the first book I can tell it’ll be a favorite of mine!

I easily fell in love with his character development and his world building, it is slow build-up but is well worth it. Won’t be too long before I dig into book 2!
