Wow. I stumbled upon a gem in this one.
saw it in the bookstore, had it recommended by Goodreads. so I gave it a go
glad I did. I just could not put it down.
some hugely compelling mains with a few of them left in a cliff hanger ending.
one in particular I have invested heavily in emotionally - gonna be ticked if she is gone.
a great read, I have already got book two on the pile.
thank you Mr. Gwynne.

After 40 chapters I only cared about one character and couldn’t have cared less about the impending “God War”

Enjoyable plot with a simple, straight forward prose, which made it an easy read.
Far too many characters however, I would go as far as to say there were too many pov characters, often times I felt I was reading a retelling of the previous chapter but from a different perspective. Even then I didn’t feel like I was getting any new insight about the world or story. Kastell and Veradis in my opinion could have so easily been one character and I’d hate to remove the only female pov character but Cywen’s chapters felt extremely redundant when her brother is the main character and also the character that has the most chapters.
It’s unsurprising to say I enjoyed Corban’s story the most, especially when Storm entered the picture, he definitely feels the most different from the start to the end of the book.
Enjoyed the book for what it is but never really felt that immersed in the world or the characters, all the characters and setting blended into one another with everyone having similar names and absolutely no description of what anyone or anything looks like. All I could tell you about Din Carreg is that it’s a village by the sea, apparently there’s Viking influence???
Did not love it enough to continue the series

Not a bad book but I can’t invest into it right now - too many characters and hard to follow

I was really disappointed about this one, particularly because I loved Gwynne’s other book The Shadow of the Gods. I netted absolute zero interest in the story and characters in Malice. DNF’d early game at 20% (end of chapter 15), having succumbed to overwhelming boredom.
