finally read this book after hearing so much about it. it was presented clearly. encouraged thinking about the role technology plays in our lives.
examples and suggestions felt too white and upper class, like welding… the FIRE guy in the example bought welding tools because the steel railing in his new home that he wanted to build would have been too expensive to hire someone else to do…
i did appreciate the practice portions. good suggestions.

Some interesting takeaways. The book already feels quite dated in some of its references and ideas.
I also feel like the author is a bit captious when it comes to finding meaning in hobbies, his preference for productivity and also what an acceptable use of technology is. This leads to some holes in logic and writing that feels conceited at times.
I appreciated the historical references, the wide range of research and ideas, and the mix of background theory and tactical suggestions.

This was a fine book. Probably if you are reading this book a lot of it will be "preaching to the choir" about how digital addictions are problematic. I agree with another reviewer that if you already know you are spending too much time on digital distractions then it would be time better spent delving into Atomic Habits or the Power of Habit and just work on doing less digital goofing off. But there are some interesting nuggets in here. I like Robert Chang's summary below:
"Cal Newport provided practical advice on how to embrace the philosophy of Digital Minimalism:
- Spend time alone to gain solitude
- Leave your phone at home
- Take long walks
- Write letters to yourself (journaling)
- Don't click "likes"
- Avoid falling into the slot machine feedback loop of likes
- Consolidate texting
- hold conversation office hours
- Reclaiming conversations
- Reclaim Leisure
- prioritize demanding leisure activity over pass consumption
- use skills to produce valuable things in the physical world
- seek leisure activities with real world, structured social interactions
- fix, or build something every week
- schedule low quality leisure
- join something (e.g. a community)
- follow leisure plan
- Join the attention resistance
- delete social media from your phone
- turn your device into single-purpose computers
- embrace slow media
- dumb down your smart phone"

This book really changed the way I interact with technology. Since I read it, my screentime dropped drastically. Even I discovered love for things I wouldn't even give a chance (because I have more free time and therefore I face boredom more frequently and I am willing to do new things) like mathematics. I enjoy more when I'm with friends, I am more focused, I can concentrate better; I would recommend this book to anyone facing a social media / news / memes addiction (you may have it but you are not recognizing it as such). I check my social media once a day or even less for like 10 or 15 minutes compared to my daily 4 hours of mindless scrolling
