I am having a hard time reading contemporary books published in the 2000s. A different time period, even as close as it is to the present.

I think this handled rape more delicately and deftly than some reviewers said, but there was more insta-love than I would have liked. Overall, I think Jae has definitely continued to improve from 2008.

Okay going to start this review off by saying there is a big trigger warning for this book as it deals with a victim of rape/sexual assault and the trial of the culprit, along with PTSD. That being said.... while it was definitely not a light read, I found it a really great one. I loved the care and patience Aiden had with Dawn. There were light moments to give slight breaks from the harder and frustrating (for the characters) parts of the journey of healing to help balance out everything. Overall, for me, yet another great book by Jae.

Read the book forever ago, but preordered the audiobook and started listening just after it downloaded. It was great. Abby Craden was amazing as always. Dawn is one of my all-time favorite Jae characters. The emotions in this feel very real, but the book can be difficult to read/listen to for some. I can't wait for the next in the series to be on audiobook.

Oh boy. This one was a trip.
I'm gonna start with explaining why it's 4 stars. The sudden and random changes in narration were sometimes hard to follow. And those moments when some thoughts were expressed in first person when everything else was in the third one? I found it a bit distracting. But that's enough complaining.

I gotta say, when I started this book I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Absolutely none. And it dawned on me pretty damn quickly. I don't think that I was ready for any of it. Please, please, if you're wandering about reading this, check the content warnings and consider them for a long, long while.

If you decide to get into it anyway, you're in for a treat. The relationship between Dawn and Aiden was simply, devastatingly beautiful.

Trigger warning for this book: Rape! Yeah, it’s a rape book, y’all.

Oh man. I laughed, I cried, it moved me, Bob.
I don’t know why I keep doing this to myself, but reading books that are about women working to get their lives back after any form of sexual abuse is one of my favorite things. Did I cry from relief at one point? Absolutely! Did I call a certain rapist several very rude names? Again, absolutely. And do I know that I’m going to be worn out tomorrow at work because I stayed up late reading this book? Abso-freaking-lately.

This is the story of two women who meet really almost accidentally (I say almost because there are no accidents). They are instantly attracted to each other. One is a psychiatrist who works with women who have been raped, the other is a sexual crimes detective. When the psychiatrist is raped, our lovely detective steps into help her get back on her feet. And they might just fall in love while they’re at it? You know, romance novel and all, it might just happen.

I spent the first half of this book shaking, nearly in tears. Jae did such a good job showing the trauma a victim feels. If only more authors truly understood how sexually abused women (and men) feel! This needs more representation!
