3.5 stars. I have listened to and loved My Favorite Murder for years and just now got around to reading this. I adore (ADORE) Karen and Georgia, but this was just okay for me. I could have gone without reading (most of) it and still considered myself a pretty hardcore MFM fan, but I’d say this is definitely for the die-hards who can’t live without any of their content.
While working on the Uncorked 2020 Reading Challenge's theme, books that make you think, I decided to pick up Stay Sexy. Now, I find myself listening to true crime podcasts and reminiscing back to my 80s childhood. The authors are hilarious with the innate ability to tell a good story, making them so relatable. You can read more about my thoughts for Stay Sexy on The Uncorked Librarian's February 2020 Reading list here: https://theuncorkedlibrarian.com/february-2020-book-releases/.
As other reviewers pointed out, Karen and Georgia write the way they talk. Unfortunately, it doesn’t translate as well on paper. BUT, if you know and love MFM, it’s not too hard to get past.
I’m glad they approached this as a joint memoir/self-help book and not a true-crime book. One of the reasons the podcast works is because they’re having a conversation. And with a podcast, you can make corrections in the next episode. Books aren’t that forgiving, so it was smart that they pivoted the focus of the book away from true crime. It plays into their strengths well.

The first 3/4 of this was wonderful - funny, poignant, honest. I listened to the audiobook, and they alternated between standard narration and recordings of some of their live shows where they read from the book. The last 1/4, I found irritating. By then, Georgia's vocal fry was more noticeable, and she seemed really obsessed with stuff that happened to her when she was in middle school. She came across as kind of reveling in being a hot mess, which I don't have a lot of patience for. If she would have said "cute vintage dress" one more time, I think I would have screamed. But, given that they made a very compelling argument about not victim blaming, it was a good exercise in reminding me not to be so judgemental. Overall, I'd recommend it - the first 3/4 was so good that I was laughing out loud.
I read this on a 5 hour flight. Super entertaining, an easy read.
I would have enjoyed this more if I actually read the synopsis before giving it a go. My bad for thinking it was going to relate more to true crime, rather than be a memoir about podcast hosts I’ve never heard of!
A number of heavy subjects were discussed so tread lightly if you decide to pick this up!
I didn’t love the live audio clips that were inserted throughout the production. I also felt like the essays were all over the place and didn’t connect together to feel cohesive.
It was entertaining enough but I have no desire to go listen to the podcast!

”It's often not easy or comfortable, but you get to choose.”
Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Harkstark, the hosts of the popular podcast ‘My Favorite Murder’ share their own personal struggles of depression, anxiety, addiction and talk about their fears through humour and life advice from their own experiences.
I love the podcast, these pair are naturally funny and great storytellers, and their book is no different. In this memoir they take it in turns, a chapter at a time, and give us an insight in their lives. This book is for anyone who has ever felt anxiety, struggled with self-esteem, depression, anxiety and everything else life could throw at you. There is a lot in this book to relate to, from their personal accounts of times they made mistakes, to the times where they were sure they was going to end up on someone else’s true crime podcast to funny life moments. They didn’t leave anything out, nothing was off limits, and for that, fans of these two will be grateful.
Karen and Georgia have become powerful voices in terms of mental health and staying safe. Their no frills accounts of what it is really like to have made it though these experiences, and the fact that they have no shame in it (and there is 100% no shame to have) and the fact they are proactively advocating for mental health makes this book (and their podcast) truly refreshing.

I really enjoyed this! It was fun to listen to, but I didn’t find myself relating to it or investing myself emotionally. That’s okay though! I still had a great time with this audiobook!
If you’re a Murderino, absolutely listen to the audiobook - it’s basically just as fun as listening to the pod, and some of the chapters were read in front of a live audience at one of their shows!

This book was worth the long wait since the preorder. I laughed and cried and smiled. I love Karen and Georgia so much! 10/10 would recommend for murderinos.
Literally me. Am I a Karen, or a Georgia? Turns out... I’m both?
