I might be becoming a historical romance girlie. Luz Alana is a half-Dominican, half-Scottish woman that left Santo Domingo with three hundred casks of rum and an ambition to expand her family's rum into a successful venture on her own.  James Evanston Sinclair, also known as Evan for most of the book, is the Earl of Darnick that is determined to build a whisky brand outside of his father's tainted money.

I loved Luz and Evan as main characters. Luz had such depth and personality, especially as an Afro-Caribbean woman determined to go into business on her own. Although the circumstances that drew them together for a marriage of convenience were unfavorable, Evan was very open and willing to care for Luz as if she was his true wife.

I loved the discussion about colonialism and slavery and its lasting impact on the Caribbean. Evan was constantly willing to listen and validate Luz's concerns regarding her place in the world and her direction for the distillery.

I'm looking forward to reading the upcoming stories with the Las Leonas!

I really really loved this book. I loved the set up, I loved the characters, I loved the plot. The pacing was a little off at time, and there were some moments when I could "see the strings" and felt like the author was showing me all their research, rather than telling me a story. BUT this is one AWESOME historical romance that's steamy af, the characters are wonderful and beautiful and amazing, Luz Alana is a badass, and Evan is an Angsty Pretzel (TM) and I just love him to pieces. I am anxiously awaiting the rest of Las Leonas!

This was a wonderful start to a new historical romance series! Luz Alana is a fierce Caribbean rum heiress trying to run her family's business after her father's death and crosses paths with a dashing Scottish Earl who's got some troubles of his own.

I really enjoyed the relationship between Luz Alana and Evan. It was spicy, fun, with wonderful depth as they helped one another work through their respective issues. I also loved the friendship with Luz and her two best friends. Those girls are fiercely protective and the kind of people you want in their corner. I also really loved the plotline of Evan dealing with his devious duke of a father, it kept me intrigued and wanting to know how it would all play out.

The downsides for me were that the beginning of the book was kind of slow and some of the word choices felt a little odd. The pacing of the book picks up around the 50% mark which makes it a much quicker and fun read. I don't really know how to explain what bothered me about some of the word choices but somethings just felt off at certain points.

Aside from those couple of hang ups, this is a steamy, intriguing, read with wonderful representation that I think a lot of people will enjoy!

A Caribbean Heiress in Paris is hands down one of my favorite books of 2022 thus far.

Our rum heiress, Luz Alana has just made the voyage from the Dominican Republic to The Exposition Universelle in Paris to present and distribute her rum all over Europe. She knows that this is going to be a hard task to take on, seeing that she is a woman of color in a space dominated by men. But she’s also made her way to Europe to try to gain control over her inheritance, one that she can only obtain if she can get the trustee to release it to her or if she is to wed, something she has no interest in doing. But all that changes when James Evanston “Evan” Sinclair comes into her life and proposes a mutually beneficial marriage of convenience; seeing that he too needs to wed in order to get the whiskey distillery he has poured himself over, out from under his father’s hands.
Adriana Herrera can do no wrong in my eyes. Every one of her books provides a perfect escape into the worlds she creates and this one is no different. Every detail paints such a vivid picture of this time period while highlighting the women of color of this time.

Luz and Las Léonas are such a strong and ambitious group of women, who are pioneers in their respective fields. The love and support that they have for one another is everything! These women are the definition of ride or die.

From the moment Luz and Evan meet, he is in complete awe of her, and rightfully so. While he tries to deny it, it is clear to everyone around him that he is completely obsessed with Luz and we love an obsessed hero. Did my partner see me completely blushing and swooning while reading this book? He sure did. But how could I not, I mean I fell so hard for this couple and the steam!!!

Thank you NetGalley and Harlequin for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A historical romance that is not only sexy and trope-y and fun but looks at the effects of colonialism and how all those rich dukes got to be rich makes for a great read. I love Luz Alana and las Leonas and can’t wait for the next book. I love learning history while reading a historical.

I received this book as a Goodreads giveaway. My opinion is solely my own.
