This amazing story about two women will pull you in, remind you of people you know or even yourselves and before you finish have you reaching for a box of tissues.

Tessa, an average house wife living in. Brooklyn takes her two kids and escapes to a rental home on a lake in Upstate New York, for the summer to take control of her life.

Rebecca, a wealthy housewife living on the upper east side of Manhattan has made some bad choices and instead of spending the summer in the Hamptons with her socialite friends, decides to rent a home on a Lake in Upstate New York,m.

These two women form an unlikely friendship, one last is doomed from the start due to the demons and secrets they keep hidden.

This is a brilliantly written story that gets your attention right from the beginning and does not let go u til you have read the last page. It will pull at your heart strings and break your heart at the same time and you learn that The Secrets We Keep really only hurt you and the ones you love.

I was gifted this book by a family member and therefore had no idea what it was about. At first it felt like a beach read, not too deep, but enjoyable. It was definitely more than that - the story explores the challenges of being a mother while also being a person and how to move on when you've made some big, selfish mistakes. I liked that there was no clear "good" person and "bad" person, but that everyone was complex and flawed. A small dislike was how similar the names of the two oldest children were - Charlotte and Katherine. It took me a while to get them straight.

I devoured this book in a day, for multiple reasons:

1. The pace was incredible and I couldn't put it down

2. I had an overwhelming sense of oncoming dread and didn't want to flesh it out longer than I needed to.

Seriously, the entire time I was reading, all I could think of was, "Something bad is going to happen", and BOY HOWDY I wasn't wrong!

This is one of those stories where I absolutely appreciate the author taking risks with her characters and what happens to them, but also feel utterly betrayed by the end because how could they possibly make that the way it ends?

This was fantastic in a heavy, mildly infuriating kind of way .

TW: Suicide, Rape, Alcoholism, Mental Health, Death

Tessa is a mother who has always seemed to struggle to fit into the mom groups at school, never feeling good enough. Then while on vacation with her two children she becomes friends with Rebecca, the spitting image of all the moms back home Tessa couldn’t stand. But Rebecca’s life isn’t all cupcakes and rainbows as Tessa believes. Soon they are both led into tragedies no mother would ever want to face.

This book pulled me in right from the start. I felt a certain comparability with Tessa. Because in all honesty what mother always feels like they got it all together? This book brought out the raw truth behind being a mother and the struggles we sometimes face because life isn’t always cupcakes and rainbows. This book also dives into forgiveness and self help. Building yourself back up again once you’ve hit your lowest point. I loved that even with the small preface at the beginning that gave you a glimpse at what was to come you still was shocked by the ending. I highly recommend this book!
