It was fun for the most part. The romance was very cringey. I'd love to have read more fantasy than romance. Thanks for the cliffhanger, now I'm invested to go over the next book. Ugh.

“But I will not run. I wouldn't be standing here if I'd quit every time something seemed impossible to overcome. I will not die today.”

I think I need to just start out by saying this book deserves all the hype it has gotten. I couldn't put this book down as soon as I flipped open to the first page. This book has definitely made it into my top favorite books of all time and absolutely is my most recent hyperfixation.

Rebecca's Yarros' writing is absolutely stunning - I wasn't confused one moment with any of the world-building, I was immediately transported into the world and felt like I was right there training alongside everyone at Basgiath. All of her characters - even side characters - had so much depth and crept their way into your heart, or had you rooting for their ugly demise.

Our FMC, Violet, is the perfect depiction of an underdog turned badass and I found myself so mesmerized by her journey. I can definitely relate to her in many ways so her perseverance and growth are so inspiring to me (I know I won't ever be a dragon rider, but maybe I won't always be such an underdog OKAY!!

I’m glad I kept up with this book; the first was very hard to get through, as I found General Sorengale, Mira, and Jack Barlow to be very unbelievable characters. It didn’t help that most of the characters we met in the first 1/3 of the book were so unlikable, even Violet got annoying with how she was both complaining and simultaneously seemed to be bored with everything.

Meeting the dragons and know their personalities and those of the children of the rebellion made up for it, as they were farm more interesting.

I will say this book always kept me in my toes with anticipation for how Violet and her friends would conquer each challenge presented.

For these reasons, I plan to read the second book.
