By a quirk of fate, I got to know the movie before the book. Fortunately, it made me curious and today it's one of my and my nephew's favorites. I love everything about it, especially the expressive illustrations. I recommend it!

This used to be one of my favourite childhood stories.

I didn't grow up having read this book with understanding. I think I did read it when I was younger. I decided to reread it just now because it comes up a little bit in the Starless Sea (that I love and that I'm also rereading). I wish I understood the love! I know it's a children's book so it won't be too crazy in depth and isn't long but I wasn't sure. I just saw a kid who wasn't good and then he decided to escape to his imagination and when he finished his pouting, he was able to eat dinner. I feel like I might relate to it more if the situation between him and his mom were better. Maybe they were arguing about something that wasn't a big deal and then he decided to escape to where the wild things are (makes me think about escaping to books or video games etc). Then the mother feels bad in the end and gives him food.

Spare and economical, yet teeming with life, energy, and emotion. And a key player in one of the most vivid memories from my youth: a school librarian with a jumbo-sized version of WTWTA, reading with great vigor to a group of young'ns gazing up at her in complete rapture. Love!

Revised - from 3 up to 5 stars
I reviewed this book 10 years ago, pre children. Both my kids love this book, and I love reading it to them. It’s a firm favourite in this house!

Three stars may seem a bit low for a book that I am fully aware is a classic childrens book. Unfortunately the first time i read this book was when i was 23, so the reason I give it three stars is just because I don't have that childhood link to this book, so reading it for the first time at that age, it really just didn't "get me" in a way I'm sure it would have if I had been read it from a very young age.
adventurous fast-paced

Not every book I read to my daughter will be a five-star masterpiece, but we’re starting strong.

I have just experienced this story for the first time! I would have loved this one as a child. I love how the pictures start off in small rectangles then proceed to get bigger as Max's imagination grows or runs "wild" I should say.

What a fantastical world Sendak created for the wild one in all of us.

Probably waaaaay worse with a digital copy. Glad I found this while tidying up, my sister had all the best stuff growing up man
