I know this book has become its own little cultural icon even outside of elementary school culture, but I don’t always remember being enraptured in the story as much as I was with the illustrations as a child. I’m sure that’s why it won a Caldecott. The sketchwork with light mixed media medium toned colors really captures my attention still. I think some children may be scared of the teeth of the monsters, but middle elementary will be less affected in my opinion. The slow encroachment of the illustrations onto the white space of the page, as Max goes further into the “wild.” The middle of the book provides just illustrations to enhance pre-readers to engage with story-telling of their own. The imagination of Max to go where he can tame monsters is a fun adventure for kids to witness. As an adult, I still am not as enthralled with the book as some of my friends seemed to remember it from their childhood. There is a theme of consistency of family support despite going off to unexpectedly into imagination or even perhaps the dream-like “running away” that Max is doing. I really need to read this with a larger group of children to see what they find engaging about this work because I personally am conflicted as to why it became so significant in American elementary school cultures and families.

I don't remember when I read this, I just know I did, and it was very good. xD

I read this book when I was little, and now that I have a son, I have read it to him. When I was looking at the other reviews I noticed a great discussion on the moral of the story. While I do not believe that there has to be a moral in every storybook, I do agree that for the impressionable, this could reinforce negative behaviors. However, I also think that this reinforces a child's confidence in their parents by showing them that even when they are behaving like terrors, when they need to be cared for, their parents will be there to care for them. I think that is the meaning behind Max's trip and the hot meal waiting when he returns.

A great classic. Have to reread it every now and then.

Read again in my children's literature class and loved it!
