One was highly sexual, that was disturbing.

Not the author's best for me. Not super memorable for me either.

3.5 stars. I absolutely love Acevedo’s YA books, so had to read this. Unfortunately it felt sluggish in the beginning but felt like it picked up later. I think part of that is because she did so much building of the characters but then the end felt too quick. There were really good parts and connections in the family I appreciated. I also enjoyed the story being told from different perspectives of the family members.

Guys, I’m really struggling because why on earth has it taken me nearly a whole entire month to read this book?! Who knows.

What I can tell you, is that this is maybe one that I shouldn’t have forced myself to finish. Maybe this should have been one that I did put down and come back to at a later date, but I didn’t. And here we are.

Maybe I will come back to it when I’m in a better headspace but for now, I don’t really know what to make of it all.

This was a really interesting story that follows a lot of powerful strong women in one family, each blessed with a magical power. As far as magical realism goes (which is usually not my thing) I really liked how we got to know all of them over the course of the book especially through their flashbacks. The audiobook was also great given it was read by the author herself. At times I found the narration confusing. Especially when it switched directly to interview format. But overall I really enjoyed this book and would it a solid 4.25 stars.
