A great addition to the history of this era. Cleared myself of the common misconception that privateer = any pirate 'working' for the side at hand. I knew letters of writ were issued, but didn't know they were the exclusive designation. ENjoyed the comparison and clarification about the roles, circumstances, and effect of privateers and navy officers.
As a Mainer I was pleasantly surprised to see so many nods to my little part of the world. THe region had its consequences but it's not normally given this much attention. I'm generally happy if i get a single nod our way. I will also admit I did a little 'cheer' at the narrator saying "Machias" the correct way as there are a few state town/city names that are always hit and miss.
I particularly enjoyed that while it was about this grouping of people/services it took a really comprehensive look at the motivations and types of people involved as well as the huge gambit of outcomes and operations as well as ties to the social consequences for the public.

I’ve always heard privateering mentioned but reading this book, I realized I never really dove into the topic. The book offered a good background and defined some important vocabulary before diving into the topic.
I enjoyed the flow of the book, with narrative stories spaces in throughout the facts. The Continental Navy has there oft told stories but I hadn’t heard of many of the privateers though their stories are just as interesting.

An excellent nonfiction read! It was full of detail & adventure without being pedantic. Subject matter was really interesting, without feeling too niche, & he had a ton of evidence to support his main thesis. John Adams was weirdly referenced, and the last 2 chapters fell flat (they were redundant & irrelevant).
I recommend to fans of American History, this is a page-turning history book, and not dry at all!
