Such a powerful, harrowing narrative of loss, love and sacrifice. I couldn't put this book down.

I received this book as a "pre-release" read while I worked at Borders Bookstore. While I will not claim that it changed my life or even had a significant impact on the way I view life, it was an interesting read and did not take long to get through. It gives an interesting insight to how an young woman struggles with faith after she witnesses a very gruesome murder early in her life.

I highly recommend "Cage of Stars". Jacquelyn Mitchard writes books that tug at your heart strings and encourages you to re-exam how you feel/think about topics that you thought you had fully developed your beliefs about. This novel was hard to begin because of the horrific event that happens in the beginning, but it is the catalyst for the entire novel and necessary for the plot. The novel delves deep into different characters individual struggles with grief, forgiveness, mercy, revenge or retribution, and what humanity means. Cage of Stars is thought-provoking and inspiring. Most pleasantly, I was surprised that views and opinions evolved and changed as I read Cage of Stars. Stick with the novel. You will be rewarded with an excellent, surprising ending and epilogue.

This was the first "adult" book that I've read in a while; I mainly stick to young adult.

It was really dry for the first 5 chapters or so, but it finally picked up. I'm not sure if I'm just used to the way young adult novels are formatted or if it was just written that way. I had to reread several pages because I would lose track of what I was reading because I was bored. I was about to put it down, but I figured I had a flight with uninterrupted reading time so I should continue. It finally picked up about halfway through. I initially wanted to give it to 2 stars for the dryness in the beginning but I ended up giving it 3 because of the plot at the end.

A good read, and another that I think of as part of the Mitchard/Picoult genre--books about how families deal with unbearable pain. My complaint about both authors is that the voices of their adolescent protagonists don't sound authentic; they always seem to have an adult perspective that makes them not quite believeable.

Part of the story focused on Mormon beliefs, which was interesting, although the author is not a Mormon, so it didn't feel like an inside peek at that religion/culture.

The book held my interest; I wasn't enthralled. A good airplane or vacation read. Certainly not nearly as good as The Deep End of the Ocean.

"12-year-old Veronica Swan's idyllic life in a close-knit Mormon community is shattered when her two younger sisters are brutally murdered. Although her parents find the strength to forgive the deranged killer, Scott Early, Veronica cannot do the same. Years later, she sets out alone to avenge her sisters' deaths, dropping her identity and severing ties in the process. As she closes in on Early, Veronica will discover the true meaning of sin and compassion, before she makes a decision that will change her and her family's lives forever." (From Amazon)

I really enjoyed this novel! Like my other two favourite novels of Mitchard - Most Wanted and The Deep End of the Ocean - this novel has great balance of mystery/suspense and emotiona.
