Since it's Molly Harper, I kept expecting someone to change into a sasquatch or a werewolf or something. But none of that happened. And I was happily surprised that it did not happen.

This starts pretty badly and I almost stopped reading right there. Supposed to be humorous I guess but just was ridiculous and then the repercussions? Anyway, read on and gets better, lets see if it redeems itself with great characters. So far the main character is not a favorite. Jane was never a favorite of mine but the series ended up pretty good.

Back in October I reviewed Save a Truck, Ride a Redneck (great title, no?), you can see that review here, and immediately fell in love with the McCready family. They are a family of eccentrics--or is that normals?--each of whom touches you in a different way.

In Sweet Tea and Sympathy we're introduced to Margot, the estranged daughter of former alcoholic Stan McCready, the family's sad sack. The opening scene shows Margot, a Chicago party planner, trying to salvage a charity function after a faux Parisian chef decides to serve shrimp, although the hostess is deadly allergic to shellfish. There are flamingos diving for shrimp, parrots being upset, flames, and the end of Margot's Chicago party planning career. And that's just the beginning of this humorous women's fiction novel by Molly Harper.

Sweet Tea and Sympathy is book 1 in the Southern Eclectric series. I started with book 2 of this and of course had to backtrack since I enjoyed it so much. I love Molly Harper's writing style, it adds in humor plus has a great romance mixed in. If you haven't tried this series out yet, I highly recommend it.

We start off with our leading lady, Margot Cary who is a party planner. After a major incident at one of her events that involved flamingos and the host having an allergic reaction Margot's out of a job and not knowing what to do next. Her failure went viral and when a long lost relative contacts her to offer a job, Margot jumps at the chance. She heads to Lake Sackett, Georgia and meets her father's family. The job she moved for is to work at her family's business, the McCready Family Funeral Home and Bait Shop. Yes, you read that right and that should tell you how eccentric some of the characters will be. This wouldn't be a romance without a love interest, so while out having a girl's night at the bar with her cousins, she meets a man (Kyle Archer) and some sparks are seriously flying. We later find out he's the Elementary school principal. Margot's hesitant to date him due to him having two young girls, and he doesn't want to have anything serious because of his girls. They wind up deciding to keep it casual, since neither is looking for a real relationship and who knows how long Margot is going to stay in town. That being said it doesn't take long for feelings start to form and I knew issues would arise when one/both of them noticed it.

Sweet Tea and Sympathy is an entertaining read with quirky characters you're going to love. The family is rather colorful and you're going to be so entertained by some of their antics. The romance aspect was well done as always and I can't wait to read more books in this series. If you're a fan of Contemporary Romance with a dash of humor you need to try this series out.

2.75 Stars. There were elements about this book I enjoyed (independent heroine, small yown quirkiness, lack of insta-love (
SpoilerHeck, even a lack of love and instead a 'let's see where this goes' at the end was a bit refreshing?
)) and then there were others I just couldn't get behind (H/h spend all of two minutes together, get one totally glossed over bedroom scene, Margot's hot/cold issues - not wanting a relationship where kids are involved yet being upset at Kyle's not feeling ready for a relationship yet/and also wanting someone who wouldn't hate his kids? Margot's also got some warped family history with her mother that never gets unpacked.)
Everything was just a little too potentially painful yet breezily easy or felt wishy washy. Especially after Molly Harpers supernatural series, this was a big letdown! Not sure if I'll check out the rest in this series anytime soon...

Harper is a fantastic author, and her skills are even more evident as she hops from a well-established supernatural world to a new contemporary one. I really enjoyed Sweet Tea & Sympathy
