gsanta1's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH

My dad really likes Lupin. He told me he thinks Lupin is better than Holmes so I wanted to read some and see for myself.

Lupin is certainly interesting.

Instead of a Detective, we have a master Thief as the protagonist. We have a detective but he plays the foolish adversary.

The stories are mostly Lupin doing something difficult, like breaking out of prison, and then having it explained to us at the end.

It reminded of a magic show. I think it’s because every story is a sleight of hand.

Like a lot of early crime stories, it has no characterization. I don’t know anything about any of the people in the stories.

I think I still prefer Sherlock Holmes.
Holmes has the gothic ambiance and it has higher stakes.

I also didn’t like the cat and mouse aspect of this book.
However, I found the denouement in these stories better then Sherlock Holmes.

(It also didn’t make sense when Lupin poisoned himself for three months to disfigure himself enough to escape identification. How could he find all the different chemicals while in prison?)

I look back at Poe’s The Purloined Letter and think “ah, that was a good piece of writing.”

Very simple prose, but these stories are a lot of fun. I read this because I wanted to see where the anime character Lupin III came from, and I was surprised at how close the derivative comes to the original. Arsène Lupin is somewhere between a master thief and Sherlock Holmes — in this short-story collection, he solves as many crimes as he commits, though it's largely so he can punish poorer thieves for their incompetence, and their impertinence in taking things he was planning to steal. But it does give this collection a nice range and variety — not just Lupin stealing something new every story, but various stories from other people's perspectives, trying to figure out who among them is the notorious master of disguise, and trying to anticipate how he'll pull off an impossible heist, or how he'll escape prison this time. Entertaining, light reading and a solid classic.

Unread shelf project 2023: book 14.

Enter Arséne Lupin, the incorrigible thief created as a contemporary counterpoint to Sherlock Holmes. He is witty, he is droll, he is full of himself in a stereotypically French way. I enjoyed this book of interwoven short stories that introduced Lupin and his (mis)adventures, although he ended out on top the majority of the time. I own the series so I can’t wait to read the next book.

Recommend for fans of Golden Age crime and earlier.
