It's easy to say this is not a love story.

In many ways this book is opposite the Heartstopper series that it launched. Tori is in a dark mental place where she's completely overwhelmed by life and traumatized by her concerns for her brother but feels totally alone in that darkness. I appreciated the depth we get to explore Tori's emotions and while the book isn't exactly hopeful in some ways Tori finds her way out of the spiral and sees she's not alone (what could be more hopeful than that).

i feel like i would’ve enjoyed this book a lot more if i had read it a few years ago, which is fine.
i wanted to gouge my eyes out whenever any character made an ableist comment/used a mental disorder as a quirky adjective, but i understand that’s how many teenagers talk, sadly. oseman was a teenager herself when she wrote this book so i understand. i also understand why, at times, it looked like depression was being romanticized.

i like that asexuality is getting more representation. it’s very obvious that both Tori and Michael are asexual. however, Tori is arospec too (you can look it up) and i’m sad that not many people know this…
the author said she sees Michael as pansexual but that his experience with sexual attraction is similar to Tori’s; this makes him panromantic asexual, right?

oseman seems to confuse both (aro & ace) identities. i am too exhausted to get into this right now but, while i appreciate having more a-spec representation, we still have a long way to go.

overall, even if it doesn’t seem like it, i did enjoy the book. it’s just that i, like Tori, complain a lot. i love her. i think she’s my favorite canonically aroace character.

I have loved alice for a long time and finally decided to read this. Honestly I loved it, but it is not perfect, of course she wrote it very young.
However I think I loved this so much because I was able to relate.

i think alice oseman is one of the best writers about mental illness around! i love how her characters are still so loved by everyone around them no matter their mental health. i thought this was a good portrayal of depression, particularly as a teen. tori's parents pissed me off soooo much, reminding me of how teenagers with any kind of mental health issue are treated, particularly teenage girls. you couldn't pay me to be one again. i think this was written in 2015 (??) so all the references to when i was a teenager were really bringing me back: all the Tumblr references and BBC Sherlock. I think I didn't love this one as much as I expected to because I didn't care for the whole Solitaire element; at times it felt a little far fetched to me and took me out of engaging with the characters. But I'm still glad I got to dive into Tori's character and more of this universe!

Another amazing novel by Oseman. It almost hurt how relatable all of this book was. Captured very real situations and feelings of mental illness and enduring trauma. It was awesome to get to see the Heartstopper world through Tori's eyes and what's she's gone through.

This book had a slow start for me but eventually I was hooked.
I cried, laughed and found genuine connection with the characters struggles.
