I absolutely adored this! I love seeing further into this “universe” of stories. Tori is one of my all time favorite characters now. I found the representation of her thoughts and feelings to be comforting in a way. It can be difficult to realize, but there is always, always a reason to keep going. :)

It's easy to say this is not a love story.

I get that this is a depressing mess of a book about a depressing mess of human, but despite the mess, I really liked this book. I think there are things about this book that you would not get unless you were A Tumblr Kid in 2012. There are so many tiny moments that were just like insanely real to that time- laying on your bed in the dark with your laptop on your stomach scrolling through Tumblr, getting random anon who were actually kids you went to school with. There were so many random little details that really felt like they could have been written by myself at 17.

The writing is really good. It reminds me of that stark Sally Rooney style that is sort of raw and deeply interior at the same time. The plot is sort of a mess and gets super chaotic near the end. There are also random things that never get resolved and I’m still wondering about. The book is dark and struggles to find it’s balance between contemporary fiction and more suspenseful thriller-esque genre. It is very much about how being there for someone through their mental health struggles can affect your own mental health, which seems like an important message to remember. It also focuses a lot on sibling relationships which I think is so important and frequently underrated.

Obviously I’m on my Heartstopper kick right now so I was mostly happy to see Nick and Charlie. It was really interesting that the novel explored a lot of the darker side of mental illness that isn’t shown in the graphic novel. I think that I really love the way that mental health is presented in such a hopeful way in the graphic novel, but this novel also grounded it in truth.

In many ways this book is opposite the Heartstopper series that it launched. Tori is in a dark mental place where she's completely overwhelmed by life and traumatized by her concerns for her brother but feels totally alone in that darkness. I appreciated the depth we get to explore Tori's emotions and while the book isn't exactly hopeful in some ways Tori finds her way out of the spiral and sees she's not alone (what could be more hopeful than that).

I honestly don’t think Alice Oseman is capable of writing a bad book. Only complaint is that her books weren’t around when I was younger!
